In Vitro 2 Advances Mobile Ray Tracing Benchmarking with Opacity Micro Maps

In Vitro 2

Helsinki, Finland | July 30th, 2025
GPUScore by Basemark, provider of leading graphics benchmarks for consumer electronics, today announced the release of In Vitro 2, the official successor to In Vitro, the first mobile ray tracing benchmark launched in early 2023.

As mobile hardware continues to evolve rapidly, mirroring the trajectory of the PC industry, In Vitro 2 reflects the rapid evolution of mobile graphics hardware and rendering technologies, offering a comprehensive tool for evaluating ray tracing performance on modern smartphones. Designed to simulate demanding real-world gaming scenarios, In Vitro 2 delivers reliable insights for technology developers, semiconductor OEMs, hardware vendors, and consumers.

Key Features of In Vitro 2

  • First Mobile Benchmark to Feature Opacity Micro Maps
In Vitro 2 is the first mobile benchmark to implement Opacity Micro Maps, an advanced rendering technique that enhances the rendering of transparent objects in ray-traced environments. This feature, previously available only on desktop platforms, significantly improves the quality and performance of shadow rendering for alpha-masked surfaces on mobile.

  • Available on Both Android and iOS
In Vitro 2 introduces iOS support alongside Android, enabling performance comparisons across the two dominant mobile operating systems. This makes it an essential tool for developers and analysts working across platforms.

“In Vitro 2 marks a big step forward for mobile graphics benchmarking,” said Mircea Cristea, Product Owner at GPUScore. “While our cross-platform benchmark Breaking Limit, released in summer 2024, is designed for more demanding ray tracing workloads across a wide range of devices, In Vitro 2 is purpose-built for mobile. It places a stronger emphasis on ray tracing over rasterization, making it the most relevant and accurate tool for evaluating ray tracing performance in today’s mobile games. With this release, we are giving developers and hardware partners the insights they need to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving mobile landscape.”

In Vitro 2 has been developed in close collaboration with industry leaders and members of GPUScore’s Benchmark Development Program. This partnership ensures the benchmark delivers accurate performance measurements, adheres to the highest quality standards, and integrates the latest advancements in mobile graphics technology.
